Cosmetic Surgery Procedures
Liposuction is a procedure used to help patients get rid of fatty pouches that cannot be removed with diet and exercise alone. During this 45-minute to two-hour-long procedure, a surgeon first uses a mixture of saline, blood restricting drugs and local anesthetic to cause the targeted area to swell and become firmer. Sometimes, surgeons use ultrasound waves to break up the fat (ultrasound-assisted liposuction technique). The fat is then suctioned out through a long tube called a cannula, which is inserted through several small incisions. The precise size of the incisions depends on the amount of fat to be suctioned and the size of the cannula used. Liposuction can be performed on several areas of the body, such as the neck, arms, legs and back. The most popular areas to be sculpted through liposuction are buttocks and stomach.
