Cosmetic Surgery Procedures
Liposuction is a surgical procedure the can help a patient at normal weight obtain a more contoured body line. One of the most popular liposuction techniques is tumescent liposuction, during which a surgeon first injects a solution of saline, anesthetic and blood constricting drugs into the fatty area, then makes small incisions in the skin, inserts a long tube called a cannula and suctions out the fat. Other liposuction types include the super-wet technique and the ultrasound-assisted liposuction procedure. Many new techniques have been developed in order to make liposuction less invasive, one of them being lipodissolve. During lipodissolve, a surgeon injects a mixture of chemicals into the fatty area. This "chemical cocktail" dissolves the fat from the area of injection. Lipodissolve is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time; however, it is not approved by the FDA. When considering liposuction, patients should recognize that it is for people who are close to their ideal weight but maintain fatty areas despite diet and exercise.
